Our Foster Mom and Dad wanted to share what we have been up to!

Meenie and Miney share a lot of moments of complicity and affection. They groom each other, leap at each other to entice the other to play and sometimes sleep together.  However, we also have some individual moments with each one and we have a different relationship with each of them.  The both bring to our home their different particularities! It is easy to live in harmony with them.  They are litter trained and we have never had any problem regarding that.  They are kind and let us take them easily into our arms.

Meenie : He likes to have company.  He is close to his brother and calls him sometimes to play.  He also likes our company and especially me (as Mummy, I am the one who feeds them more and who is at home the most).  He often asks me to cuddle and pet him and he purrs to show me that he likes it.  He is also the more talkative but not too much . He has his moment of craziness so he runs and jumps just for the fun!  He is very cute and loving!

 

 

Miney :  He is definitely the brave one!  He likes to be cuddled and welcomes us by rolling on the ground.  He is also curious and likes to look through our windows at what is happening in the street.  If you want to know what's going on in our neighborhood, just ask him! He also loves keeping an eye on the birds!  Last week we discovered he was a formidable fly hunter! 

 

As you can see, we are a couple of charming fellows. 

 We are available, at no adoption fee, to the right home.

As we love each other so much, we are really hoping to be adopted together.

Adoptathon June 2014

On June 21, 2014 a few dedicated S.N.K.I. volunteers spent the day at the Kingston Centre Pet Valu  showing off some our kitties available for adoption

How it all started

Imagine you are locked away in a medium security prison, feeling lonely, abandoned and seemingly without a friend in the world.  Your only solace is in the satisfaction of feeding and caring for cats who face the same life as you; having no loving home to feel protected and secure.

S.N.K.I. was born in 2009 and gained prominence/recognition as a result of 17 feral cats who made their home inside the walls of a prison just outside Kingston, Ontario.  The colony had been around for about 20 years, but prison officials had finally had enough, and wanted the cats removed.

The inmates had grown so attached to the cats that they had circulated a petition amongst themselves gathering 300 signature out of 345, hoping that a solution could be found.  They loved the cats and did not want to see them face a certain fate. Shouts of  'save our cats, save our cats, save our cats' could be heard from the heartbroken inmates.

Step in, Spay Neuter Kingston Initiative.  This caring group of volunteers desperately wanted to save the cats, so made a proposal to the prison officials. After a long and intense media campaign, the proposal was eventually accepted.  All the cats were live trapped, visited with the veterinarian to get spayed/neutered and vaccinated, 'ear tipped' (to be identified as having been attended to) and then returned to their prison colony.  Their litters of kittens were taken in by foster families, and over time, were placed with loving families.  In addition, special high quality shelters were built and placed around the prison grounds to offer protection for the cats from the rain, heat or severe cold.

Not every story has a purrfect ending.  This one does; the cats are loved and cared for and the inmates can continue to receive companionship knowing that they saved the lives of innocent animals.

Chrys - neutered and adopted; poor fella was targeted by one of the adult cats and needed to be removed!  Now he has a loving home.

In my view, this sheds a whole new light on society's view of prison inmates and their capacity for compassion.

Fast forward to June 2014.  S.N.K.I. has now stabilized over 20 "managed"  feral cat colonies in and around Kingston, are currently working to stabilize 11 more and have numerous colonies on the waiting list.  Without the dedicated work of the S.N.K.I. volunteers, our objectives to reduce cat overpopulation could not be met.

Tommy needs a home

Hi......my name is Tommy!  My mummy is not well enough to look after me anymore.  I am 5 years old and would love to be your snuggle kitty.

My foster Mum wants you to know a little about me:

'Tommy is completely at home after less than a day! He happily ate wet food as well as dry and had used the litter box with no trouble. He slept on my bed and stayed quiet throughout the night. He is extremely affectionate and loves cuddles, playing with toys and doesn't object to being held or having his tummy rubbed. He also seems very attentive, it's easy to grab his attention and he gives us space when we're busy. It's funny, I am not used to a cat with such an easy-going personality.'

We are still waiting to go home!

We love our foster Mom but really want to go home with you!

My names is Miney.  I am very kind, sweet and extremely affectionate. I love to be cuddled and I will  purr to let you know how much I enjoy it.  I am still a little shy for the moment (I only just arrived at my foster home), but I am a little braver than my brother!  I look like an oriental cat: fine face, thin and some marking like rosettes.

 

I am Meenie.  I am a more shy than my brother, so when I feel a little scared,  I try to look for the best hiding places. I am curious (I am a cat, you know).  Let me show you how affectionate I can be in your arms when you cuddle me.

My brother and I would really love to be adopted together.  We have been waiting so long for a home that for the right person my 'people' tell me that there is no adoption fee.

We have a home, yipee!

Niko and Tessa have gone to their 'furrever' home and their new Mom sent us an update!

"We have been cat owners for 37 years, and when my last older cat passed away, I knew we just had to have more kitties in our lives.  We are so happy to give them a home.

They are getting on fine here. We kept them in a small bedroom for a few days, just so they would feel secure.  They love looking out the windows at the birds.

After 2 days, we let them out to explore. Tessa is definitely the brave one, inspecting every corner, and table top!

Niko is shyer, but his curiosity always gets the better of him, and he follows Tessa.  If there is a sudden noise, (my husbands lay-z-boy chair squeaks!) he skitters back into the 'safe' bedroom, but re-emerges fairly quickly in case he misses out on something!  Both love to play, especially chasing each other up and down the stairs.

They get lots of pats, and we get purrs all around.  They now roam freely through out the house during the day and will go back on their own to their quiet room when they want an afternoon nap.   We still put them back in the bedroom at night, just until I get a better feel for how much trouble they can get into ha ha  :)"
